We’ve got ourselves a European brawl tomorrow in Day 3 of the EPICENTER Major 2019 playoffs as Team Secret, the current No. 1 Dota 2 team in the world, are set to take on the reigning The International 2018 champions, OG.
While you’d normally think that the reigning TI champions would be favoured in this matchup, given the way that this season has unfolded, it’s instead the other way around.
The 2018-19 Dota Pro Circuit has been all about Team Secret so far. They’ve won two out of four Majors this season. More importantly, in 9 LAN tournaments this year Team Secret have only failed to win it all just three times, and in those three times, they have yet to post anything less than a Top-4 finish.
To put simply, OG are facing some tall odds.
But, if there’s one team who’s been known to surprise everybody, it’s OG, who won The International 2018 after qualifying all the way from the open qualifiers and spending much of the tournament as its biggest question mark and underdog.
With that said, let’s see if OG is worth risking on tomorrow in their matchup against Team Secret, or if Team Secret are more likely to walk away the victors.
Team Secret vs OG Betting Analysis
What is it with OG and stand-in coaches?
Last year, OG won TI8 arguably with their coach Sébastien “7ckingMad” Debs as a stand-in. This year, they pulled off a Major upset in what’s arguably their biggest game of the season with their new coach, Titouan “Sockshka” Merloz, standing in for the team’s captain, Johan “N0tail” Sundstein, and yet, they somehow pulled off a win.
To be fair, however, Evil Geniuses had themselves as much to blame for the loss.
Instead of playing to their lineup’s strengths, they got caught up chasing OG around the map, and before they realized it, they’d become severely underfarmed while OG had three extremely farmed cores and two supports who were a nightmare to deal with.
We have enough reason to believe that Team Secret won’t fall for such antics.
Clement “Puppey” Ivanov has spent the entire season playing to learn, which means, he’s unafraid to experiment, even in high-stakes matches, and due to the sheer skill, talent, and chemistry of Team Secret, they still manage to walk away with the win, more often than not.
With their win against Evil Geniuses being their first series win the entire tournament, we just don’t see a scenario where OG will end up taking out Team Secret.
Sure, we could definitely see OG pulling off an upset win and keeping things close for much of the series, but given how Team Secret have been so much better than every other Dota 2 team outside of Virtus.Pro this season, it’s hard to bet against them.
Of course, given the odds, we’re inclined to lean less towards choosing a winner and going with the likelihood of this series going to a third and deciding game.
